Most of the animals at this shelter are strays -- from feral animals to lost or abandoned pets -- though some animals are rescued from mistreatment or injury. The New Rochelle Humane Society is a no-kill shelter, which means that it does not euthanize animals but rather keeps them until they’re placed in a home.

Each year, the New Rochelle Humane Society places more than 500 dogs and 900 cats in new homes. Potential pet owners can browse the available pets on the Society’s website before visiting the shelter in person. At the shelter, you can spend one-on-one time getting to know the animal in a private room before making the important decision of whether to adopt. Potential pet owners must be over 18 years old and own a home or have proof of a rental agreement that allows pets.

The New Rochelle Humane Society helps defray the cost of spaying or neutering pets through their certificate program, which provides discounts at participating veterinary offices. Other services include microchipping; it’s included in adoption fees, but you can bring your existing pets in to be implanted and registered, as well. For a small fee, you can bring feral cats in to the shelter, where they’ll be spayed or neutered and vaccinated.
